Maggie has hit a rough patch in life. Her husband tells her he’s gay and leaves, she finds out she has breast cancer, and the little girl from next door will not leave her alone. Maggie and John, the girl’s father, do not see eye to eye on anything. This is not what Maggie planned for her summer vacation to go.
Poor Maggie, she’s lost her husband and finds out she has cancer. She doesn’t want to tell anyone that she has cancer and is going through radiation. On top of that, the 7-year-old girl next door keeps showing up at her house uninvited. Then John comes over and gets mad a Maggie. She just can’t win. She also can’t keep her mouth shut. Maggie tells off the nanny, who doesn’t properly look after Chloe and causes the nanny to quit. This of course makes John angry.
John and Maggie get into multiple disputes until John realizes he has been angry with the wrong person. Being a doctor, John notices the radiation burns on Maggie and becomes concerned. They eventually start to get along and hen John’s ex-wife comes to visit. Oh boy, and she is a piece of work. She is absolutely stunning and completely self-absorbed.
So what does Maggie do? She opens her mouth and tells Brook what she thinks of her parenting or lack thereof. Maggie knows that Brook will leave and break Chole’s, little heart. John and Chole know this also but Chole is hoping her mom will stay this time. Maggie and John become closer which infuriates Brook to no end.
Will Brook leave? Will Maggie and John develop a relationship beyond just being neighbors? Does Maggie overcome cancer? If you asked yourself any of those questions then you will just have to read the book.
